Why American Automakers Are Failing In China
Detroit automakers like General Motors made a fortune selling cars to Chinese consumers after the Asian country opened its auto market to foreign firms in the 1980s. But the good times are over as Chinese firms have caught up with the foreign firms who once taught them the automotive trade. Top names like BYD, Geely and Great Wall are now making globally competitive products and many companies with tech backgrounds are entering the industry, too, including Li Auto, XPeng, Nio, Xiaomi, Huawei, Baidu, Tencent and Alibaba. Jeep’s joint venture already went bankrupt, and one industry analyst said he expects Ford and GM to withdraw from the country in the next five years along with other such ...

Why Fast Food Has Gotten So Expensive

Prices at limited-service restaurants including Wendy's, Taco Bell, Chick-fil-A and Chipotle have increased more over the past decade than both full-service restaurants and overall inflation, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Experts say rising labor costs are the main culprit. McDonald's underwhelming first-quarter 2024 earnings results are one example of a fast-food giant feel...
Why Many Americans Still Feel Bad About The Economy Despite Strong Data
Просмотров 161 тыс.13 часов назад

And where do you see the country headed in the next five years? These are the kinds of questions used by the University of Michigan to calculate the Consumer Sentiment Index, an economic indicator measuring how people feel about...

Do Fed Comments Cause Too Much Volatility in the Stock Market?

Why U.S. Cities Are Going Broke

Spending cuts are abound in many U.S. cities as inflation lingers and pandemic-era stimulus dries up. At least 53 major cities have debt obligations that outstrip their assets, according to an estimate from Truth in Accounting. The group estimates higher debt burdens than many public officials report, due to allegedly underreported retiree benefits. The rising public debt may potentially leave ...
Why The U.S. Government Is Buying And Destroying Homes
Просмотров 234 тыс.14 дней назад
The U.S. government is buying up and destroying American homes. Homeowners in the floodplain are choosing to voluntarily sell their doomed properties to the government. Since 1989, FEMA has helped fun around 45 to 50,000 home buyouts. FEMA is estimated to have spent somewhere around $4 billion on the project so far but that’s just a fraction of the total amount spend on buyouts, since there are...

I do not buy the argument that it is labor costs. If your fast food outlet is doing sufficient volume, labor costs per food item are a few pennies at most, even with wage increases. OTHER costs have gone up, though. And those costs are often driven by corporate greed and things like private equity takeovers.

As a ML engineer working in the AI space for a couple years (and some more years as a regular SWE), I see it differently than most people here. Junior jobs are disappearing because LLM can do just as bad as them. Doesn't mean we are needing less people, it just means nowadays we need less juniors and more seniors in terms of share of total. Senior jobs have been getting more scarce lately because of overhiring correction following COVID but the talented living in tech hubs still get good jobs. Don't fear AI, AI is a product built by tech workers and maintained by tech workers, if anything, it will accelerate digitalization of the world and need more tech workers. But do get really good at what you do, because it seems like the future will be more demanding in terms of skills. Read those computer science books, hit the kernel programming, understand computers and networks, and you will always have a job.

Since covid I started cutting out McDonald's and wendys when a single patty meal was costing over $15CAN (or just 2 mcdoubles being over $7)then subway altogether when it started costing over 15$ for just a 12 inch sub(and they are phasing out toppings like olives). Now I go to burger King on Wednesdays or with coupons or Mr sub where the same canadian club costs 3 dollars less than subway. Or Tim hortons where a large coffee and Turkey Bacon club is under $10 even though that club is way more food than a crappy Mcdonald burger of the same price.

Years of US bullies on China sanctions after sanctions, particularly Huawei has already created a hostility of 1.4 billion Chinese against the US products. Chinese take strong national pride when they choose Huawei over iPhone. US is bullying the wrong guy in the ally and shooting foot on its own. As an American, I am so sick of our dumb gov't.

With the exception of Tesla, no American companies can compete with them. They're talking about building factories in US, that won't work either due to high prices/high wages.
